Winnipeg Free Press Archives – If you’re a Winnipeg resident, you can access these archives with your library card at this link!

Manitoba Archives – Winnipeg Beach Oral Histories

When Whiskey Ruled the West by James Gray – this is one of the only secondary sources on prohibition in Manitoba. It was written in the 70s, but still an excellent resource.

The Spring Runs Fast by Nellie McClung – McClung is a really engaging writer, and a great place to start if you’re wondering how anyone might have thought prohibition was a good idea. She presents as convincing a case as I’ve seen.

West End Dumplings – Christian Cassidy is a great Winnipeg historian, and often one of the only people writing on obscure topics.

Manitoba Historical Society – The Boons and Banes of Booze

Real Estate News – Rum Runners – Another resource often writing on obscure Winnipeg topics

Liquor, Gaming, and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba – This timeline is a surprisingly useful resource!

Global News – From Speakeasies to theatre cocktails – If you’re curious about the basics of when certain laws were changed, this is a very useful timeline.

Peels Prairie Provinces – Prohibition Campaign Songs

Prohibition is always a fun topic – speakeasies, Al Capone, bootlegging! Alex is here to tell you that none of that exciting stuff happened in Manitoba. Believe it or not, Manitobans demanded prohibition. And then we changed our mind. Were temperance-advocates just middle-class busybodies? Did bootleg liquor really taste like old boots? Listen to find out!
